It was probably the middle of a cold November night in 8th grade when I finally physically made the leap into womanhood. The next morning was a mixture of confusion, shock, a yell for mom, and a sudden awareness of cramps in my lower stomach. Is that too much information for you, gentlemen? You can skip this post – or pass it on to any young ladies you may know!
However, my 12-year-old womanhood struggles no longer have to be struggles for all the young girls out there because as a member of Team U by Kotex, I am here to educate and change the way girls feel about their periods (and not in the academic way I did U by Kotex changing the world presentations while completing my BA in Popular Culture – in the really-want-to-help-girls kind of way)!
This is my besties, Dorothy. We’re practically attached at our slimming down hips (diet life – am I right, ladies?). Dorothy is slightly younger than I am – but I won’t disclose ages because… well, you should never ask a lady’s age!
Nonetheless, being best friends and soul sisters, Dorothy and I often discussed the pleasures and pains of being women. Did you know that sharks can’t smell your blood when you’re on your period? Dorothy didn’t – but she does now! (Wear that bikini proudly, girl!)
Because I sure didn’t know that. You know why I didn’t know that? Because my dad told me it was going to be like the above image. Why did I listen to him? Because I didn’t have a U by Kotex ambassador to tell me that it doesn’t flow like a tsunami. And now Dorothy knows that too.
And although we can sometimes lose control over our bodies and emotions, we are women and we should be proud! There is nothing to be embarrassed about because we all have the same questions and misconceptions even if we feel that they’re stupid. Never be afraid to ask. I helped educate Dorothy. We’ll help educate you. You’ll help educate younger girls. Together we will become a confident generation of women. HEAR US ROAR!
[If you have any period-relations questions, feel free to leave comments. Don't be shy or embarrassed!]
I can’t believe I haven’t blogged in such a long time.
When I initially decided to start a blog, I was so into writing every night and finding cool things to keep my readers interested but during my last year of university, and entering the “real world” after graduation, free time became scarce and writing on my own time was non-existent.
But after a (very) long hiatus, I am bringing my personal blog back to life.
I hope post-graduate, full-time entrepreneur Annette is just as exciting as university problem ridden, intern Annette.
I guess we’ll find out. Thanks for sticking with me and happy reading.
